Back to Natural [139/366]

Looking around my little studio, I realized today that I have been practically shooting strictly with strobes. I’ve neglected my old friend, window light.

Time to change that and head back to natural.

I used only light from the window camera left. I wanted the bowl stack to fade into blurriness, so I chose a wide open aperture.

I was going to convert this image into black and white in Photoshop, but didn’t like the total loss of color. To keep a bit of the natural feel, I lowered the opacity of the black and white layer to about 60%. This means I eliminated 40% of all the color, which was enough to turn what little color that bounced into the scene from the room to grayscale.

Mark W. Mitchell - Bizzare!

Garlicky [138/366]

We love garlic.

This afternoon I roasted a garlic head for a garlic butter I’m making for some homemade veggie burgers.

I can’t describe to you how delicious it smells in the house right now.

Flickr: *ChiChi* - Cool shot! I bet it came out awesome!

Baked [137/366]

You know what bugs me?

No. What?

I’ll tell you what bugs me.

Oh. Ok.

I recently got a preview of a certain magazine’s cover photo.

Yeah, so?

Well, it was out of focus.  So, I did the same photo. Just . . . in focus.

It’s a basic skill. Perhaps, an art director of some sort missed it. But, I’m putting this image forth as an example of a sharp image AND appropriately exposed.

If you see a like cover shot of a certain foodie magazine, take notice and remember my image;)

Hire a professional.

Enough said.

Delicate [136/366]

Overhead lighting can be quite beautiful. It’s good to take your light and move it – do not just place it at your subject’s side.

I do, however, need your opinion.

I chose the shot above to post as today’s #Project366 over the shot posted below.

I chose the lighter one because it went better with the delicate nature of the paper lily.  However, I do like the darker shot because of the vibrance of the colors.

What do you think?

Flickr: {michele} - Did you shoot it on white? I like the one you posted better than the dark (I think the flower is too dark with it).

Flickr: Andrew Potter Photo - [http://www.flickr.com/photos/micheledrumm] Above pic was shot on white, just with a spotlight right behind the blossom. The dark is too dark, you’re right. Interesting how turning off the background light can make such a difference!

Flickr: aithom2 - Hmm that is such a tough decision. They both give a completely different mood/feel.

I really like this one, because it is light and bright which fits with the nature of the flower/season it blooms.
But, for that same reason I think the other one is interesting. It is such a strong contrast (both in terms of visual quality and concept if you will) that it makes for a striking image. Plus the textures, and subtle color changes really pop on the darker one.

Flickr: momenteTV - Great light and focus and very good work on it!
